What Is A Celtic Music Session?

A Celtic music session is an age old tradition of musicians gathering together anywhere in the world to play a few tunes and have fun.

When I was growing up in Scotland, I remember my parents talking about ceilidhs where people in a community in the Scottish Highlands would gather in someone's house or perhaps the village hall and spend an evening together.

At this event, there was music, dancing, storytelling, a community catching up after a hard day's work.

The ceilidh was a way for a community to bond and connect.

Now, you might be thinking, what does this have to do with a Celtic music session.

The CD Roaming Free is Colin MacLeod and Rory Sinclair's first collaboration.

Colin and Rory were both across in Australia and just happened to be at the National Folk Festival in Canberra in 2004.

This started the friendship and musical collaboration.

Roaming Free was recorded in 2005 and the playing from both Colin and Rory has a distinct

Roaming Free was recorded in 2005 and the playing from both Colin and Rory has a distinct vitality and energy to it.

If you are across in Scotland in September of each year, be sure to check out the Resipole Fiddle Fest (www.resipolefiddlefest.co.uk)

Resipole is at the top of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula in Argyll and hosts some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland.

Colin, Rory and Rory's partner Karin are the founding members of the Resipole Fiddle Fest.
